I'm looking for some ideas. Kind of wanting to do something that will help teach my kids what the 4th is all about. I'm going to look to see what's going on around me but do you have any ideas of what I can do to show my daughter the importance of the 4th? Fireworks are always fun to watch but it doesn't look like we are going to be able to do that due to a burn ban we are under. I'll see if they are being held anywhere near us. So what are ya'lls plans? :)

What can I do next?

Well if you were in Utah, I'd say come to the Scera park from 9 am to 9 pm (friday-monday) and enjoy reenactments of the colonial era including mock battles, demonstrations from period artisans including: blacksmith, bobbin lacers, broom makers, daily life tent, and more!!
lol
This is what my family puts on every year. It's so much fun! Me and my son will be dressed in period clothes. We cloth diaper already, but we use modern cloth, but for this even he will be 100% period to the time including his flat diapers!! Other than that, I'll be going to a wedding and enjoying my time with my son :D Maybe some fireworks with my son's dad too.
**Oh and I love watching the parade. Apparently we have the largest parade in the country for the 4th of July. I thought it was small, but hey, what do I know?

We have a parade to go to in the am, the lunch, swimming, fireworks, spending time with family and then more eating and more fireworks. This is my favorite holiday ever!

Well there's a ban of fireworks sales and displays across my county and surrounding counties because we are in a drought all across Texas. There are two pretty serious forest fires in my area (one is the second biggest to ever hit Texas). They are recommending no barbequing outside also(not that i eat meat anyway)

I was thinking of going out to eat instead.

We're getting together with our next door neighbor to combine our fireworks and food. She's a GREAT cook, she made lasagna and enchiladas last year, and I handled desserts and appetizers. We'll have hot dogs, corn on the cob, macaroni and potato salad, lemonade, and whatever else I decide to serve, too. We set out chairs in front of our houses on the sidewalk to watch the the kids play, the fireworks, eat and socialize. The kids decorate the driveways and sidewalks with sidewalk chalk.

This year I'm going to make some red, white and blue iced cupcakes, and place a sparkler in them. My neighbor and I are also going to make homemade ice cream, and let the kids try their hand at making ziplock baggie ice cream ~

One year my grandson and I baked a cake and he decorated it in red and blue stars, icing and sprinkles. In a mobile home park nearby where my cousin lives they have an annual Independence day parade through the park, it's a big event, anyone can go see it and they have a huge BBQ afterwards. The library has lots of books in the Children's section on Independence Day/4th of July, and local cemeteries sometimes have ceremonies for people in the community to attend and you can see patriotic decorated graves of fallen heroes.

PBS has a special every year in the evening with fireworks set to patriotic music, it's awesome : ) Oh, and I almost forgot, here's a cake I've made many times, it's fantastic for the 4th, a "Stars and Stripes" cake ~

We are also foregoing the fireworks because of burn bans in my area.

I plan to cook fish tacos and blueberry fool - recipes compliments of Shawna !!!! TYVM. Then my son and I may go to a movie.

Low key for us.
I try to celebrate the spirit of the 4th in our daily life by remaining responsible, involved citizens.

Whatever you do -
have fun !!!!!

This burn ban doesnt include fireworks. any ban on fireworks would've had to be filed early in June and they didn't include fireworks. That being said, its still not a good idea to do them yourself in such dry conditions. Most municiplaities have them. If you dont mind driving, we are having them all over the metroplex. I know just where I am, they are doing them at the Airhogs game, Lonestar park, over the lake in Arlington, over Joe Pool Lake, at the Arlington Highlands....theyre everywhere! so far as the significance? theres a Colonial Village in Dallas that is a historical recreation of a New England town that will have a lot of storytelling, and whatnot set up for the 4th. Or you can go to the library and find a book to read to her about it.
