Hi everyone!
I get so irritated with the in fighting and "clicks" at work, the managers are the worst! Then people tell me it's like this everywhere, really? I don't have any issues personally with any particular person, however, it is very clear with the management team who they "favor" as the rules don't really apply to everyone. Our head manager is very vulagar and loud and rude. He even called me white trash becasue I wrote my name on the bottom of my coffee mug! He hits on his secretary daily, and changed policies in our work area so much we are sometimes left wondering what is going on. We all worry about our jobs becasue he has said that we are useless and he is pushing to bring in new people. So naturally we are all a littlle on edge about our jobs. I guess I am just hurt because it was never like this before, I felt before like I had a future here, and now, I feel stuck. Please tell me that it REALLY is not like this everywhere? Our moral is incredibly low, I just pray that I will go someplace where my wotk is appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Sally it's funny you say that becasue HR found out back in December that I was doing work out side of my classification and came down on my management. So for me, it's been rough, but it has also been like that for everyone. I was supposed to be promoted, but since the HR incident, I can kiss that goodbye. I have seen people around me getting in trouble for little things. There was a survey done in the company and our area scored the absolute lowest, so I really hope that something is done!

My office is definitely not like that! You have a terrible manager. If I were you, I'd get out of there ASAP.

Sorry, but my office is not like this. There is no name-calling and a general sense of professional courtesy all around. Of course there are some people who are closer than others, but in general we are respectful of one another and do our jobs.

Unfortunately, the managers have the power. I don't recommend complaining to HR or a higher authority because they'll find a way to make your life miserable. If you feel this is sexual harrassment, that might be the only way you would have some legal protection if you complain.

If you can't handle it, look for another job. It's sad but true. Employers have the upper hand.

I worked in the same law office for 15 years. It was miserable. Different rules for different people; my boss was a nightmare; runner would lie about going to court to file documents making me miss a deadline. Even though I told supervisor that she outright lied I was still held responsible for the deadline being missed! Now how can I be hold responsible when someone looks me straight in the face and lies AND takes my papers with her so I of course really believe that's where she's going!

I was finally laid off and got a new job and on my gosh am I happy! I just didn't realize it could be this nice to go to work! I am never stressed; my boss is nice and treats me with total respect. It is a small office and the other support staff has come from dysfunctional offices so we are all VERY happy to be here and go out of our way to make sure there is no office politics or strife.

It really can be much better.

Good Heavens, what type of business is this?

NO, this is not normal in a professional situation.

Personally, I would look for a new job, I just could not work in a place like that.

I like Fairness, honesty and professionalism.. I expect each person to do their work, while at work.

Sure having fun, being polite etc.. But when a tone is set, the work will reflect that.

Sorry about all of the Yahoos you are working with . Just stay out of it.

The jobs I have had have never had an atmosphere like this. People are usually smart, professional, and I make some good friends at work. All my jobs have been science jobs in biology fields: science research, lab work, field work, science paper writing, and educational outreach. Except for one job I have always had awesome managers as well. I think you should look elsewhere because that sounds like it is no fun to even go to work each day dealing with people like that!

That sounds particularly bad. However, I do think that most offices have some degree of immaturity, gossip, cliques, and fakeness. This is why I have made an effort to be cordial, but not get too personal with most of the co-workers.

I think there is a little of this everywhere. I teach in an elementary school, and the principal has her favorites, it's very clear who they are. The old principal had her favorites as well. There are cliques, and talking behind people's backs and not enough emphasis on who is doing a good job.

Every company has its issues but not every place is like this so consider finding another job. The grass isn't greener somewhere else but the BS factor should go way down in a better managed environment.

Management sets the tone. If they are gossipy, back biting, back stabbing, vulgar, unsafe, lazy, partial, etc., then those under them figure that out and either choose to participate/act in kind or not. If someone chooses not to participate, then it is rough. Good luck.

ETA - I wouldn't wait around for change. The entire management is going to need to change in mindset and/or in physical people - consider a) what's their motivation for change when management is either powerless to make effective change or those in charge like how things run and b) change is always difficult and imperfect. I wouldn't hold my breath on any changes occuring quickly enough and with enough impact to improve the morale.
