Embarassing Breast Question

I stopped breastfeeding earlier this year - around February (I bf both my sons for 17 months the first time and like 20 months the second time) I stopped bf the first time because I got pregnant so my body never really adjusted back to normal since I resumed bf again so soon after stopping- my nipples are still very sensitive like a strong hug causes pain and I cringe when one of my boys accidently hits me there. Is this normal? I have gone back to my breast size before babies but still discharges some milk occasionaly. I am due to get a mammagram this month but do not think is advisable when I am still having nipple discharge? Thanks for any comments.

What can I do next?

I expect it will get better over time, but it's reasonable to rule out any possible issues. Just call the dr's office and ask one of the nurses if you should proceed with your mammogram. I would think it will be fine. Might be a bit more painful than usual however.

If it's really just the nipple area that's painful, look for some of those gel pads in the nursing aisle; I thought they were really soothing. I've also heard cabbage leaves really work, but gel pads seem a little more discreet. :)

I agree with Grandma TM, discharge is normal. We weaned a few months ago after 3yrs of BF and I still have a little discharge. I also would occasionally have discharge before I had my baby. It is normal as long as it looks like breast milk. If it is greenish or smells funny, see a Dr. asap. You could have Mastitis or an infected duct.I would talk to your Dr about it and, in the mean time, try warm, wet wash cloths on your breasts to relieve the pain. I would talk to your Dr. before your mammagram though, why go thru the discomfort of that if you are already having breast pain.
I hope all is well.

Call your doctor and put off your mammogram. If a hug is painful, a mammogram will be excruciating!

I had risidual milk for many years after stopping breast feeding. I can even now squeeze out some liquid. I think it's normal. Tha pain tho, I dont know about that, so you probably should research that with your doc. You may have an infected duct.

After my daughter was weaned, I had some milk leaking 2 years after.

After my son was weaned, my birth control dried me up right away.

As far as pain. I'd say put off the mammogram. I would ask the Doc about the pain.

you may just be one of those women whos milk never totally dries up. I havent breast fed in a year and i still have a small amount of milk. not much, but a little. I occasionally i still get a feeling like im letting down. apparently it is just a hormonal issue that some women have. Its worth talking to you doc about though.
