He Wont Let Me Put Him Down

My son is 5 months old and screams anytime he is put down. I have let him cry for up to 30 min, but he just consistently gets louder, redder, and very distraught, and I fear that he is working himself up too much that it is unhealthy. He will not even sleep in his own crib. I am at wits end, and am getting very tired of not being able to get anything done that requires two hands! Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Have you tried a swing, or even a walker or exersaucer? That way he could be in the same room with you and maybe that would help? If not you may want to try one of these, www.mobywrap.com you can get them here in town either at other mother's or at baby bear. at least you'd have 2 hands and a quiet baby.

hi, sara!

welcome! my little guy (now 16 months) had similar issues! he just like the comfort of being held. i read and really liked the advice for getting my child to sleep in his bed from the Baby Whisperer books (especially the one with the questions/answers). my little guy responded quite well to a wrap (not a baby bjorn, but a long piece of fabric that gets wrapped around him and you to keep him snuggled close by)...it seems like we used that for a long time! that allowed me to have both hands free to do stuff! eventually it got better, so hand in there! we now use the hotsling for him to sit on my hip when he gets clingy! let me know if i can help more!

This can feel like quite the situation to tackle, can't it? I notice this is your first babe and he's only five months - you're doing a fantastic job to make yourself so available to him - it's clear why he'd want to be near you!;)
I've been a nurse with midwives, doula and childbirth educator for nine years now. I've run the gamut reading about all of the different ways to be with our kids and such. Phew! But I'll tell you what - Harvey Karp has nailed it. Happiest Baby on the Block and his five s's work. They really, really work. Check out the website - I even have the DVD if you want to borrow or come over for some much deserved rest and watch! What he's passing along is really just intuitive parenting but it's not always so intuition clear, is it? And our spread out culture doesn't help much!
And, hey, I'm new here too from Tennessee!
